Quick Guide to General Dentistry Examinations

Most general dentistry experts recommend having a dental exam and cleaning twice every year. If you have diabetes, poor immune function, or a history of gum disease, you may need to see your dentist more frequently. During a dental exam, your dentist can check for early signs of tooth decay and gum disease that occur long before obvious symptoms develop. When treated in the earliest stages, these problems are more easily resolved. Here are a few more details about the typical dental exam. The Comprehensive General Dentistry Exam A comprehensive dental exam not only checks for cavities and gum disease but also analyzes your mouth, head, jaw, and neck. Your dentist may recommend a comprehensive exam if you are a new patient, or you haven’t seen a dental provider in a long time. If it is warranted, your dentist may order X-rays to obtain more detailed images of your teeth and jaw. Here are a few more things you can expect:

  • Your head, neck, salivary glands, and lymph nodes will be manually examined for signs of inflammation and tenderness.
  • Your dentist will determine if your teeth and jaw meet together properly.
  • Gums will be evaluated for periodontal disease.
  • Your dentist will look for lesions on the soft tissues inside your mouth including your lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat.
  • Your jaw function and temporomandibular joint health will be assessed.
  • Existing dental work such as crowns, fillings, dentures, and bridges will be checked for stability.
